How does an AI agent work?
An AI agent is software that, based on a language model, independently carries out a series of steps. It looks at the situation, works out what needs to happen, uses your systems and checks whether the result is right.
The difference from classic automation sits in that last step. A script always follows the same path and stops as soon as something deviates. An agent works on meaning rather than fixed rules.
That makes it strong on incoming post, enquiries and documents, and weak wherever a single error carries weight. Which is why we always build in an approval step.
An example from start to finish
- Read: the agent recognises the attachment as a purchase order.
- Look up: it finds the customer in the ERP and retrieves the price agreement.
- Check: it tests the prices and flags what it does not recognise.
- Prepare: it sets up the order and notifies your colleague.
